Sorensen and Gravity-Charouz Racing go fastest at the post-season WSbR tests
(13.10.2011)
Denmark’s Marco Sorensen went fastest in the two-day test at Barcelona at the wheel of a chassis run by the World Series by Renault’s youngest team, Gravity-Charouz Racing. The Formula Renault 3.5 post-season tests were held at the Spanish circuit near Barcelona on 11 and 12 October. Although new cars are on their way for the coming season, the newcomers tested chassis with this year’s specifications.
The youngest team on the grid, Gravity-Charouz Racing, had Marco Sorensen at the wheel of its cars. The newcomer to Formula Renault 3.5, who participated in Germany’s Formula 3 series this year, set the best time overall on Wednesday morning, beating even the WSbR’s established drivers. Throughout the two-day tests, the Danish driver remained in the top eight, scoring the eighth, sixth, first, and third fastest times in the four sessions.
Yann Cunha is a slightly less experienced Brazilian driver who participated in UK’s Formula 3 series this year without major success. In the WSbR tests, it was his debut behind the wheel of such a powerful car and he gradually got to grips with it. For a first-timer, the 20-year-old acquitted himself well.
Marco Sorensen, Gravity-Charouz Racing #27, said: “Compared with Formula 3 where I raced this year, Formula Renault 3.5 is much more powerful. There is greater downforce and the car is just much better and faster in all respects. At this point I don’t know what will happen next year but I would certainly like to continue working with Mr Charouz because I was getting faster throughout the two days thanks to the work of Gravity-Charouz Racing engineers. This is a highly professional team and it made me feel really good.”
Yann Cunha, Gravity-Charouz Racing #28, said: “I am very happy with the two-day test at Gravity-Charouz Racing. They are a highly professional team who helped me to get accustomed to the new equipment. It is a big leap forward compared with the Formula 3 that I have driven to date.”
Antonín Charouz, General Manager, Gravity-Charouz Racing, said: “This was a very important test for us as we wanted to show that we are among the best and that our separation from DAMS was the right decision. We had two young drivers behind the wheel of our cars. Marco is one of the more experienced ones, which he proved with the best time overall. After this two-day test in Barcelona, we are optimistic about the coming season.”
Bob Vavřík, Manager, Gravity-Charouz Racing, said: “I am very happy with our drivers’ performance. Marco is a talented driver, as he confirmed with the best time overall. For Yann, it was the first time that he had driven such a powerful car and we were pleased by his gradual improvements. The feedback worked very well with him, which is very important. We are happy to have proven once again that we are one of the best teams.”
